Kevin Collins - Founder

A childhood spent in Zimbabwe instilled in me a lifelong appreciation of the country, people and wildlife of the region. The Big 5 Safari Company was born from clients using our short haul business ëweekend a la carteí requesting me to arrange trips to Africa. Our mission is to put the word "real" back into safaris and give clients the true experience of Africa. I am often asked which my favourite place in Africa is! I started to write a list and decided that there was a case for everywhere I had ever visited. That is the beauty of being on Safari as each day is an adventure no matter where you are! Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe offer the perfect blend of pristine national parks and excellent guiding standards to allow us to deliver some truly great journeys in the region. I hope we get a chance to create a once in a lifetime journey for you!

Katharine Hunt - Safaris Client Manager

Katharine’s love of Africa began 18 years ago with a night time crossing of the Limpopo River in the cable car at Pont Drift in South Africa. It was a journey into the unknown bush of Botswana and one that revealed the sightings of a leopard successfully hunting and the thrill of being surrounded by a herd of 300 elephants. She was hooked! Having lived in France, Amsterdam and Dubai and travelled extensively worldwide, her passion for Africa draws her back year after year allowing her to combine her twin passions for conservation and photography. Her extensive experience has taught her what makes a good safari and she enjoys developing itineraries for our clients to give them the same great African experiences that have thrilled her over the years.

Abigail Collins - Safari Consultant

Abigail Collins - Safari Consultant

Abigail went on her first Safari with her mother at the age of 15 who asked her what animals she wanted to see so she could tailor the safari destination to the animal. And so with elephants on the list Chobe in Botswana was chosen and Abigail will never forget the experience of being able to get so close to the elephants from a boat. What a wonderful peaceful experience. Throughout her lifetime Abigail has gone back again and again on Safari with some exciting experiences and adventures; She has stayed in lodges, permanent tents, and been on a very special private mobile tented Safari. She has been on elephant back safari and has watched wild elephants in the middle of the night walk tiptoe past her tent. Once her vehicle had a flat tyre in the middle of a pride of lions hunting on a night drive, seen a lion attack a porcupine and been charged by a rhino on a walking safari. Her favourite experiences include a tower of 14 Giraffe running past the vehicle, watching a herd of elephant cross the plains lit up by lightning flashes , watching elephants swim across the river with their trunks held high and following a cheetah hunting as it sprinted across the bush.

I can trace my family heritage back to the boat that Jan van Riebeeck sailed to the Cape in 1652 and have personally lived in Africa all my life, firstly on the copperbelt in Zambia, then in various places in Zimbabwe. As the daughter of a bush crazy father, my childhood holidays were spent in National Parks all over Zimbabwe. I love the African bush with Mana Pools being my favourite place in the world! Zimbabwe has so much to offer – Bumi, Hwange, Chimanimani, Nyanga, Gonarezhou, Matopos and of course Hwange. Every wildlife encounter is amazing especially where elephants are involved! Being based in Zimbabwe I am able to oversee journeys made by our clients and share my love of the African Bush!

However, after having worked extensively on The Big 5 Safari Company website, she is now captivated by Africa. Her firm favourites as a first timer are Victoria Falls along with Hwange and Chobe National Parks as her premier epic safari adventure. Her other “must visit” is the Bazaruto Archipelago in Southern Mozambique.

Kristyna Collins - Family Safari Specialist

Kristyna Collins - Family Safari Specialist

The newest recruit to the team! At the tender age of 6 Kristyna went on her first safari in the South Luangwa National Park. She was hooked within 20 mins and spent the next 10 days charming the guides, drivers and chefs. The local team were amazed at her resilience during the game drives, ability to soak up information, ask penetrating questions and sleep in the back of truck on night drives but instantly be wide awake at the critical moment as a leopard hunting in the dark was spotted. Having said that her favourite pastime on Safari was bone collecting – and her bedroom now has a display of various teeth (Crocodile, hippo, Impala) as well as Porcupine Quills, Snake skin, Honey Beaver Nest and Dung Beetle Nest. The larger bones such as the hippo jaw bone and elephant teeth she sadly had to leave behind at the lodge on the specially created “Kristyna shelf”. The next year she followed up with a boat Safari in Chobe Savanna Lodge with her grandparents in their 80’s, and spent hours drawing the herds of buffalo, and crocodiles that she saw. With 50% African blood in her she is definitely on track to become heavily involved in the Big 5 Safari Company as she gets older !
