Safari Itinerary Summary

Days 1 to 3

On arrival into Lusaka airport you will take a flight to Mfuwe Airport and from there a road journey into Zambia’s premier national park - the South Luangwa. Your destination is Mchenja a luxury authentic bush lodge set high on the banks of the Luangwa River and is located in a top notch game viewing area. It is one of our favourites!
This exceptional park is renowned for its prolific wildlife and in particular its leopard sightings. Expert guides will enthral you with their encyclopaedic knowledge of Luangwa's flora and fauna. Norman Carr was the original pioneer of walking safaris in South Luangwa and this activity for many is the draw to this pristine wilderness. Exciting day and night game drives are a large part of discovering what this park has to offer.

Days 4 to 6

Depart South Luangwa with a flight to the incredibly beautiful Lower Zambezi National Park for your stay in Cassia, a private tented suite at Chongwe River Camp. Plenty of time to relax here in this luxury tented camp at the confluence of the Zambezi & Chongwe Rivers. This location offers a varied mix of activities - day and night drives, boats cruises, walking safaris, catch and release tiger fishing or the camp’s flagship experience canoeing which offers you the opportunity to view wildlife from a more natural perspective.

Days 7 to 9

Depart Camp by boat for your river crossing into Zimbabwe – quite an exploration down the Zambezi River! After clearing customs at a border post you will arrive by boat at Ruckomechi Camp on the western edge of Mana Pools National Park in Zimbabwe. This World Heritage Site, apart from having a stunning landscape, is renowned for its populations of elephant, buffalo and packs of African wild dogs.
Camp boasts an infinity pool and hammocks, an inviting cushion strewn star-gazing deck to admire southern skies and a “bath with a view” experience, set up in a scenic spot.

Days 10 to 12

Continue your Zimbabwe expedition with a light aircraft flight to experience the country’s premier park – Hwange. Your destination is the charming Little Makalolo Camp, set in a remote private concession to the south east of the park. This game rich area offers exciting 4x4 game drives visiting the life sustaining waterholes where elephants congregate in large numbers. In camp, the log pile hide gives wonderful close up photographic opportunities and we recommend you include a night spent under the stars on the Madison Pan star-bed platform!
As well as its famous elephant populations, Hwange is sanctuary to 25 types of predator and more than 400 bird species. Large predators include lions, cheetah and leopard and there are the exciting smaller nocturnal predators too of serval, civet and bat eared foxes. Other special sightings include roan and sable antelope.

Days 13 & 14

Today a short light aircraft will take you to Victoria Falls for some relaxation at The Victoria Falls Hotel. This Edwardian iconic 5 star hotel will take you back to the elegant bygone era of the early 1900’s. After settling into your stunning surroundings you will not be able to resist the walk through the gardens to view the magnificent Victoria Falls before enjoying afternoon tea on the Stanley Terrace.
The Big 5 Safari Company will be pleased to book any activities you wish in advance of your trip. Options include: Guided tours of the Falls, Zambezi sunset cruises, helicopter or microlight flights or to continue with adrenaline fuelled activities there is canoeing, white water rafting, zip lining, horse riding - the list is endless.

Day 15

Return to Victoria Falls airport for your onward return home.

Mchenja Camp is a stylish tented camp located in the central region of the South Luangwa National Park. Set under huge ebony trees on the banks of a broad section of the Luangwa River, Mchenja has a lovely relaxed atmosphere with sweeping river views.

With only four specially designed octagonal canvas and thatched chalets built on concrete bases, and one two-bedroom family unit, Mchenja is an intimate affair. Simple but wonderfully maintained the chalets are well sized and include large honeymoon size beds, an indoor Victorian-style bath with a river view and open air but private outdoor facilities featuring flush WC, basin and shower.

The beautiful central chitenje (lounge) is built around one of the old fallen ebony trees, open-sided and thatched. Brunch is taken in the shady lounge and dinner is more often served on the river bank under the stars. The camp also boasts a small plunge pool under thatch in the camps communal area, also under thatch.

Aimed to be as environmentally friendly as possible, Ruckomechi’s hot water and lighting is provided by solar power. Little Makalolo Camp lies in the heart of Hwange National Park, in one of its best game viewing areas, overlooking a vibrant waterhole.

Little Makalolo sits in a private concession allowing for exciting game drives and walking safaris without the crowds.  It offers privacy for guests who enjoy small camps and a sense of remoteness. The camp’s six traditional-style tents – including a family unit – are spacious and en-suite, with indoor and outdoor showers. Solar power is used for tent lights and to heat water, ensuring a lighter environmental footprint.

Linking the tents to the main area are teak walkways. Here a false mopane tree in the centre of the camp shades a separate dining and living area, with an open fire deck for those convivial evening fireside tales under the stars. The plunge pool is a fantastic addition especially for those hot summer days. The log-pile hide at the waterhole in front of camp offers thrilling game viewing to literally a Noah’s Ark parade of animals as they come down to quench their thirst.
