Shamwari Game Reserve, aim to give you the ‘safari of a lifetime’. Game viewing is carried out during the morning and evening when you are guided by your game ranger in an open game viewing vehicle. If you have a particular interest, please mention it to your ranger who will be happy to merge your plans with those of the group. There is great game viewing, in modern open game viewing vehicles that have been especially converted to maximise comfort and viewing potential. Your personal game ranger will provide insightful and valuable information about the fauna and flora.
The game drives will take between three and four hours, with a sundowners stop at sunset and a coffee stop in the morning. Guided game walks can often be the highlight of your African trip, for it is only then that you gain a true perspective of the fauna and flora around you.
In between game drives if your time is not filled with relaxing, reading, spa treatments, swimming, enjoying delicious cuisine or a game walk, you can visit one of the two Born Free Big Cat Sanctuaries, Shamwari’s renowned Rhino Awareness Centre or the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre.
Shamwari Game Reserve has five eco-systems supporting a diverse range of plant, bird and animal life, including the famed Big Five (lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino and elephant). A good variety of antelope species have been re-introduced, including red hartebeest and springbok. The reserve has a dedicated Wildlife Department (including qualified wildlife veterinarians, ecologist and environmentalist).
Shamwari Game Reserve boasts a huge variety of birdlife. There is a big range of raptors which include Black Harriers, Pale Chanting Goshawks, Black-shouldered Kites, Fish Eagles, Booted Eagles and Secretary Birds. The reserve also holds a good population of birds associated with water sources like Three-banded Lapwings, African Darters, Malachite Kingfishers, the occasional Spoonbill, African Shelduck and the strange looking Hamerkop. The birdlife at Shamwari Game Reserve is enough to keep a bird watching enthusiast entertained for a good few days. So pack your bird book and binoculars and come visit Shamwari for a well deserved birding holiday.
