Baines River Camp

Baines’ River Camp is located in the eastern region of the Chiawa Game Management Area, on the northern bank of the Zambezi River and within the Lower Zambezi Valley. This colonial style safari lodge boasts magnificent views across the broad expanse of river to the World Heritage Site of Mana Pools.

Baines’ is an intimate and luxurious lodge with eight double suites as well as the two bedroomed Baines’ Cottage, ideal for families. A classical safari style is combined with rich fabrics, hand-picked furniture, kilims and luxury linens to create the elegant simplicity that runs through the camp. Each of the suites commands its own view of the Zambezi River from a comfortably furnished verandah. En-suite facilities include a walk-in shower (two suites feature an additional outdoor shower); other features include air-conditioning (running with the camp generator), ceiling fan, down pillows and duvets, minibar and tea and coffee facilities.

The mainly open-plan design of the central lodge includes the Selous Bar, lounges, dining area (there are no set meal times), 11 metre swimming pool and magnificent river views. Evenings are spent around the outdoor fireplace, there is a small collection of books, two workstations for emails, WiFi and a wellness menu offering a selection of treatments from the comfort of your suite.

Dining is a relaxed affair, enjoyed together with other guests on our veranda-style dining area or under the stars. If you prefer, an intimate dinner for two on your private veranda can be arranged.

You can also enjoy a massage or beauty treatment in the comfort of your suite or private veranda.

The Baines’ Cottage is a 2 bedroom (family) unit with its own spacious lounge, dining and kitchen area. The cottage is complemented by a deep veranda with a spectacular view of the Zambezi River, complemented by comfortable furnishings and an alfresco dining area.

Safari Experience

River Cruises: Cruise the Zambezi River with an experienced river guide in search of a breeding herd of elephants bathing, ever-curious buffalo in the reeds or the elusive African Skimmer.

Canoe Safaris: As you glide through the waters of the Zambezi River and its tributaries without the sound of an engine, you will have the privilege of viewing a wide variety of game.

Sport Angling: The Zambezi River is home to Africa’s most fearsome freshwater predator, the Tiger Fish.  There is a strict policy of catch and release.

The guides and equipment are geared for both conventional anglers and fly fishing enthusiasts.

Game Drives: The 4,000 square kilometer unfenced wilderness area offers an uncontrived interaction with nature, where encounters with other game viewing vehicles are minimal.

Wildlife & Birdlife

The Lower Zambezi Valley is known for its diverse habitat, from riverine forests and palm groves to savannah plains, albida forests and more, so offering a home to 374 bird species.

The list includes some show-stoppers such as the Pel’s Fishing Owl, Böhm’s Spinetail, African Hobby, Narina Trogon, African Fish Eagle, Pennant-winged Nightjar and the African Skimmer.

Both in the bush and on the river, elephants are practically part of the scenery, offering constant entertainment during your safari activities.

During daytime you will have the opportunity to find leopard, lion, hyena, buffalo and a variety of antelope on your game drives.

On an evening drive you may spot genets, porcupines, honey badgers and aardvarks .
