Kaingo Camp

Kaingo Camp is located in a remote area of the South Luangwa National Park which is extremely rich in wildlife.

The camp is set alongside the Luangwa River, and each chalet at Kaingo has its own private deck on the river, where a private lunch is served.

Built and run by Derek Shenton, third generation conservationist and safari guide, Kaingo has a stylish design, and features six traditional brick and thatch chalets set on the banks of the perennial Luangwa River.

Each chalet has an en-suite bathroom and an outdoor bathtub tucked under shady trees. A centrally located chitenje includes the dining room, leadwood tree bar and a relaxing lounge. Kaingo and its sister camp, Mwamba are built to have a minimum impact on the wilderness, with no electricity and or noisy generators running all day, promoting solar panel use and water filtering.

While staying at Kaingo, guests have access to an unparalleled network of photographic hides. These offer fantastic opportunities for close-up encounters with the abundant wildlife.

Safari Experience

Wildlife is very frequent at both camps, and as Kaingo is on the river, it offers great opportunities to observe water birds, hippos, crocs and elephants.

Wildlife & Birdlife

The Park hosts about 60 different animal species and over 400 different bird species.

The main predators in the Luangwa Valley are lion, leopard, spotted hyena and wild dog – with lion and leopard probably the most common.

Elephants and buffalo occur in large herds, and the river is home to the largest concentration of hippopotamus and crocodiles.

Amongst South Luangwa’s many herbivores, several are endemic to the area such as the beautiful Thornicroft’s giraffe, Cookson’s wildebeest and the Crawshay’s zebra.
