With only four specially designed octagonal canvas and thatched chalets built on concrete bases, and one two-bedroom family unit, Mchenja is an intimate affair. Simple but wonderfully maintained the chalets are well sized and include large honeymoon size beds, an indoor Victorian-style bath with a river view and open air but private outdoor facilities featuring flush WC, basin and shower.
The beautiful central chitenje (lounge) is built around one of the old fallen ebony trees, open-sided and thatched. Brunch is taken in the shady lounge and dinner is more often served on the river bank under the stars. The camp also boasts a small plunge pool under thatch in the camps communal area, also under thatch.

Guests staying at Mchenja can choose if they wish to view their wildlife on foot or from a game viewing vehicle. In addition to the ebony grove at camp there are two more stunning groves close by and game viewing in the area is superb, with night drives very worthwhile.
Zambia’s premier wildlife destination, nestling at the southern end of an offshoot of the Great rift valley – the South Luangwa National Park – covers an area of 9050 square kilometres in the east of the country.
The park, renowned for its unspoiled beauty and varied habitats, supports one of Africa’s richest concentrations of game and birdlife.
Over forty species of large mammal and some four hundred species of bird thrive in this last haven of wild Africa.
The meandering Luangwa River with its many ox-bow lagoons and shady ebony groves forms the eastern boundary of the park, whilst the western horizon is dominated by the spectacular Muchinga escarpment, rising almost a kilometre from the Valley floor.
Endemic species found only in the SLNP include Thornicroft’s giraffe and Cookson’s Wildebeest.
Mchenje is in a prime game viewing area with high concentrations of leopard.
Luxury in the bush with a free-standing bath in each tent.
A plunge pool is also in camp.
Explore ebony groves which are perfect hunting grounds for leopard.
Abundance of game throughout the season.
