Night Game Drives

Game-drives after dark are often a real safari highlight when you’re more than likely to encounter a whole range of nocturnal species: leopard, porcupine, genet, hyena and countless owl species. The South Luangwa is a top location for night drives and one of the reasons that guests return time and again to get their adrenaline hit.  This Zambian park is a world renowned hotspot for leopards and big cats generally, who come to life after sunset!

The preamble to a night drive is to find an idyllic location, stretch your legs, guzzle an alcoholic sundowner and watch an amazing sunset.  Then once dusk falls you’ll climb back into your 4×4 open vehicle and your spotter, who handles the spotlight, will scan the bush to try to find some exciting species that are now becoming active. This is often considered to be the best and one of the most exciting times to find unexpected african wildlife.

In private reserves, where night-drives are permitted, a guided safari might last long after dark. The Kwando concession in Northern Linyanti is another hotspot for night drives where guide and tracker work as a team to spot owls, genets, civets, porcupines and honey badgers, as well as big cats out hunting.

Be Awed by The Victoria Falls

The Victoria Falls – one of the greatest attractions in Africa. The Victoria Falls is a 100m-high waterfall in Southern Africa, which divides Zimbabwe from Zambia and is recognised as one of the natural wonders of the world. Known locally as the ‘smoke that thunders’ due to the incredible noise that this torrent of raging, whipped up Zambezi River makes, it is estimated that 546 cubic metres of water plummets per minute in the rainy season. At around twice the height of Niagara Falls and vastly wider, Victoria Falls is recognised as the ‘biggest curtain of falling water in the world’. Consequently, it is an awe-inspiring sight, where the spray causes constant rainbows overhead.

The Victoria Falls can be experienced either on the Zimbabwean side or in Livingstone, Zambia where a whole host of adrenaline fuelled activities can be enjoyed.

Including: “Flight of the Angels” by helicopter or microlight, White Water Rafting on the most demanding commercially rafted river in the world, or an exhilarating horse back safari through the African bush.  For something wholly more relaxing, drink a cocktail or two on a Zambezi Sunset Cruise, have Afternoon tea at the iconic Victoria Falls Hotel, enjoy a Guided Tour of the Falls and cycle or walk around the border town of Victoria Falls to meet the locals.

Safaris from the Air

Safaris from the Air

No journey to Africa is complete without taking to the skies in one form or another to see breathtaking views of the African landscape.

There is the glamour of a private flying safari in Namibia or Botswana. If time allows even a month long Cape to Cairo journey.

Then there is the serenity of a hot air balloon flight whether it be over the Drakensberg Escarpment and Blyde River, the Busanga Plains of northern Kafue or the red hot dunes of the Namib desert.

Or take to the skies in a micro light to get a unique perspective on the beautiful African Bushveld in the Kruger.  This adventure usually takes place over the Big Five territories surrounding Hoedspruit including the Klaserie Nature Reserve.

Walking Safaris & Sleep Outs

Bush walking is one of the most exclusive experiences on offer in the African bush. The South Luangwa in Zambia is said to be the birthplace of walking safaris and still today provides some of the best on-foot game viewing experiences. Whether it is walking between your bushcamps or going on a mobile walking safari where your camp will move with you over 4 or 5 days spent in the bush with all your creature comforts catered for.Or if you would like to experience a sleep out in the bush with only a mozi net between you and the stars then The Luangwa valley is a good location to do this. Another hot destination for a walking safari is in Mana Pools, Zimbabwe where some of the best guides in Africa with many bush stories to tell, will get you up close to lions and bull elephants. Perhaps not one for the faint hearted!

For a Botswana sleep out option, we suggest Kanana camp in the Okavango Delta.  The two level sleep out deck is on the Xudum River and overlooks a waterhole known for its fantastic birding.  The sleep out is some 20 minutes from the main camp, but don’t worry a guide will be stationed a short distance away for protection!

Up Close Encounters

Up Close Encounters

Up close encounters with game are both thrilling and humbling. A safari in the Kruger NP whether guided or a self-drive is a fabulous opportunity to get close, as much of the game is habituated to seeing vehicles. Zambia and Zimbabwe parks are wonderful places for close up encounters whether it be on foot or on a canoe or boat safari – both provide wonderful opportunities to view the wildlife from a perspective other than in a 4×4.

Mana Pools in Zimbabwe has a few unique owner run camps as does the Lower Zambezi National Park in Zambia where we can recommend some excellent camps if up close encounters are what you want from your safari.

Superb Hospitality

The amazing thing about being on a Safari in remote parts of Africa is the amazing food that is served up in the middle of nowhere!  Whether it be on a mobile safari in the South Luangwa or in a camp in the remotest parts of of the Okavango Delta, there are always copious amounts of delicious food throughout the day. Afternoon teas are definitely a highlight with freshly baked cakes or biscuits served each day before the evening game drive.

Africa is a vast destination with logistical challenges, but whether you are in untamed wilderness, on a Mozambique castaway island such as Benguerra or in the city, you will find a rich variety of cuisine served with Africa’s customary warm hospitality.

Wherever world class vineyards are located then it is usually the case that there are to be found gourmet restaurants and this is certainly the case in Cape Town & the Cape Winelands. The Western Cape is a foodie heaven offering a marvellous choice of restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets.

Relaxing In Paradise

Southern Africa offers superb holidays combining Safari and Beach or City and Beach.  So no matter what you are celebrating whether it is a honeymoon, big birthday celebrations, a wedding anniversary or passing examinations, this continent delivers in spades a holiday of a lifetime.

A superb combination is a 3 or 4 day safari in South Africa or Botswana, followed by 5  or 6 days on a paradise island off the coast of Mozambique. The islands of the Bazaruto and Quirimbas archipelagos are dotted with a superb choice of lodges and award winning ‘eco-chic’ villas serving delicious local cuisine, and offering unique marine and island life experiences.  Experience delights such as island hopping on a dhow, snorkelling and some of the world’s best coral reef scuba diving, portuguese colonial history, deep sea fishing, whale watching and beach horse back riding.

Or consider a Zambian safari and relaxation on Lake Malawi, known as the “Lake of Stars” as named by the missionary-explorer Dr David Livingstone.

Water Based Game Viewing

Whether in a guided canoe on the Zambezi River or a mokoro in Botswana’s Okavango Delta, the experience of a water based game viewing activity is not to be missed. Silently gliding through the waterways of the Okavango delta in a mokoro reveals the hum of insects and the sounds of the bird calls. Reed frogs and jewel-like malachite kingfishers are revealed within the papyrus reeds. Canoe or Boat Safaris will get you close to sandbanks with lazing crocodiles, nesting carmine bee-eaters and grunting hippos and not least you can look up at close quarters at magnificent elephants drinking at the water’s edge.  A boat safari on the Chobe River is superb for a photographic safari and especially rewarding for birding enthusiasts.

South Luangwa is another hotspot for water based game viewing during the Green Season (mid Jan to early April) when the Luangwa river floods; making many parts of the National Park impassable by road.  River safaris explore the flooded plains and river in the verdant valley, offering an exceptional alternative safari adventure for those who have already experienced dry season game viewing.

Big 5 Action Safaris

The term ‘Big Five’ was historically used to denote the five most dangerous animals to hunt in Southern Africa. Fortunately the term is now used to describe the most popular and exciting animals to view, whilst on safari in the Kruger National Park, namely lion, leopard, rhino, cape buffalo and elephant. The Kruger and Private Reserves of South Africa are home to the Big 5 and due to the habituated nature of the animals to vehicles, can exceed all expectations of witnessing animals on the hunt.

Or if you want to stay at one of Botswana’s most exclusive lodges with extraordinary game viewing then look no further than Mombo Camp – located in the Mombo Concession on the northern tip of Chief’s Island within the Moremi Game Reserve in the Okavango Delta, Botswana. This area boasts enormous concentrations of plains game and predators – providing arguably the best big 5 game viewing in all of Africa.

We had a wonderful time, everything went off perfectly.

The accommodation was excellent and all the transfers and pick up just happened seamlessly !  We loved Victoria falls our guide was very knowledgeable .  Our Riverboat stay was amazing , we even glimpsed a Leopard from the river bank plus Lions , hippos , crocs  and many other animals.  The Safari lodge in Chobe was lovely and again we saw Lions and lots of Elephants , Zebra , Giraffe and buffalo.

We were amazed at how much we saw and did in 6 days.

Thank you for arranging such a wonderful time for us.

Zimbabwe & Botswana – We had an amazing time.  It took a fair while to get through Zimbabwe immigration so it was about 3pm by the time we got to the lodge at Victoria Falls and we only had half an hour from the time we arrived to the time we were being picked up for the sunset cruise which was a bit of a rush! We hadn’t had time for lunch at the lodge but there was enough to eat on the cruise to keep us going. The cruise was very enjoyable and was a great start to our holiday. The lodge at Victoria Falls was fabulous with great accommodation and lovely food. We saw plenty of animals visiting the water hole from our room giving us a taste of what was to come. Victoria  Falls is stunning and we thoroughly enjoyed our guided tour in the morning.  In the afternoon we took the courtesy bus into Victoria Falls town and had high tea at the Victoria Falls hotel, which was splendid and then did a bit of shopping, of course! The night out at the Boma was most enjoyable and very entertaining.

Our transfer to the Chobe Princess was well organised and although, again, we had to go through various long winded immigration procedures, we arrived at the house boat for a very nice lunch. The accommodation was very good and we were lucky enough to get the cabin in the front with its own balcony. The food was enjoyable and the staff very helpful. There was just one thing that let the house boat down (for me) and that was that the water was never very hot and I do prefer a hot shower. The trips out to the river bank were great and the guide (Morgan) was very knowledgeable and always made every effort to make sure we could see as much as possible and get as close as we could. On our second day out we saw so much. We were lucky enough to glimpse a leopard walking along the ridge, appearing whenever there was a gap in the bush. As well as the numerous elephants, crocs, buffalo, hippos, giraffe, zebra, impala, etc, we, again, were very fortunate to be around to see lionesses feeding on an earlier kill. And not forgetting the beautiful birds that can be seen everywhere.

So time to transfer from our boat and on towards our lodge in Botswana. Going through the immigration process once again we were picked up with a few others and on our way. We had to drop the others passengers at various lodges and as we were the last drop off, and we had been travelling for quite a while, we felt in need of a comfort break but nothing was said about where we might stop. In the end Lynn asked if she could use the toilets in one of the lodges that the other people were being dropped at. A small point but I think the driver could have been more proactive in asking if we needed to stop.

Eventually arrived at our lodge in time to settle in and have lunch before going out on our first game drive. The accommodation was again fantastic with wonderful views and everything we needed. While at the lodge, we were looked after with plenty of drinks and snacks and great evening meals. The game drives were very fruitful, again with the help of a great guide we saw plenty of wildlife. Although we had seen most of the animals from the Chobe Princess, we added to the list by seeing a huge python and then saw a group of elephants crossing the river to the island which was a real treat. Two more sightings of lions, one of which included an adult male with his full mane. I’m not sure how much other travellers see in the time that they stay but I felt we were extremely fortunate and what we saw far surpassed my expectations.

All in all, it was a fabulous holiday which has left us with many wonderful memories of Africa and of the other travellers that we shared our time with. The venues were first class and there must be a great deal of organisation behind the scenes which enables everything to run so smoothly. I would certainly recommend your company and in fact I’ve already passed your details on to my friend who is very interested in going to Africa.

Thank you for your contribution Katharine to making this a holiday to remember.

We found The Big 5 Safari Company through a friend of a friend, and from the start it was clear their knowledge of Africa was extensive. Kath put together the most amazing itinerary in South Africa for me and my family, and arranged everything from flights to Cape Town, to VIP meet and greets at the airport, to a stunning 4 night safari at the Shamwari Game Reserve, with amazing accommodation along the way. Tours and excursions were also arranged for us through their contacts, and we highly recommend the shark diving!

Nothing was too much trouble for Kath, despite my numerous questions via email, and I can’t recommend Kath and her team enough. Will definitely be getting back in touch again in a couple of years when we want to do it all again!

We loved EVERY moment of our Self Drive in South Africa! The accommodations were excellent from start to finish and we had absolutely no complaints about the facilities, service and food at each one.

Starting with the V&A Waterfront, it couldn’t have been better located, right there in the thick of things in such an historic building.

Next on to the Winelands and the lovely guest house La Fontaine in Franschhoek. Here we were to find a completely different atmosphere, but one which was just as warm and welcoming. Breakfast was excellent!

At De Zeekoe we had a lovely room overlooking the gardens. Here we had a meerkat experience – up at half past stupid to watch a family of the little cuties in the middle of a field. It was amazing and we got some great pictures.

Laird’s Lodge truly lived up to the description in the booklet you sent me. We had such a wonderful stay there.

We had another relaxing stay in Addo and our visits to Addo Elephant Park were so productive in terms of photography.

Next we went to Kwandwe for what was the most exhilarating experience of my life. We could have spent the whole month there, not just 3 nights. The food was first class, the surroundings unbeatable and the staff are possibly its greatest asset.  I am so glad that you offered the option to have our own vehicle, ranger and tracker for those 3 days. Yes, it was more expensive but, SO worth the extra money.

I have already recommended your company to friends and other photographers, as we were both highly satisfied with the service you provided for us.

I’ve just read your “Why travel with us?” statement and it has to be said you ticked all the boxes. Our special occasion was our honeymoon and you definitely applied the personal touch to the extent I referred to you simply as “Katharine” – not The Big 5 Safari Company – in all discussions at home. I have booked trips all over the world for the last 25 years and I don’t think any one person has stood out like you have. The bespoke nature of our trip and some of the ideas and suggestions you came up with were truly inspirational e.g. Zambesi Sands. Discussions where you clearly captured our personalities of what would work and what wouldn’t were spot on and you clearly assessed us very well.

I would also like to share with you the note sent by Abercrombie & Kent in 2015, before I found your website: “We offer a similar range of accommodation to Audley and our prices should be broadly speaking in line. For a 14 night holiday with a week on safari and a week in Mozambique, I think the figure of £8k per person wouldn’t be too far wide of the mark so if you’re budget is closer to £4k per person, I don’t think we would be able to offer anything to match this budget from the accommodation that we choose to offer”. Suffice to say we did exactly what we planned to, add in some extras and you were still able to meet our budget whilst still staying in luxury … and possibly even the same places!

We will share some photos in due course but our honeymoon was truly memorable and Lisa and I would like to thank you for your efforts in making it happen. I have already started recommending Big 5 to my friends and family and we look forward to travelling with you again at some point.

Gordon & Gill – Nailsworth

Firstly thanks to The Big 5 Safari Company for your assistance in managing the changes resulting from our flight delay.

Unfortunately, due to our outgoing flight delay we lost a day at the start of the holiday and at the end effectively lost half a day due to significant problems confirming our connecting flights from Livingstone – none of which was the responsibility of Big 5 as we booked our own flights and I think next time we would ask Big 5 to do this for us!

That’s the bad news, the good news is that despite these problems we had a fantastic time.  Victoria falls is simply spectacular and we did still manage to see the moonbow on the second evening and on the river safari we managed to not only see our first elephant, but managed to collide with a hippo under the water – all of which was great fun.

Our accommodation was very comfortable and of high quality.  Waking up to zebras on the lawn is the norm there but doesn’t half leave you delighted and bemused.

At the Zambezi Sun in Livingstone and at Camelthorn Lodge in Hwange National Park we were really impressed by the welcoming attitude of all the staff we met.  All of our drivers for the transfers were courteous and very helpful.  The only thing we are inclined to “complain” about would be that we found the transfer long and a little uncomfortable and would have preferred to take the recently introduced rail car through the park.

At Camelthorn our primary hosts/guides, Sibs and Vusa, were not only experienced and knowledgeable guides, but engaging and warm individuals which made for fun and interesting conversation over dinner.

As safari ‘virgins’ we did not really know what to expect from the drives, but quickly learned.  By that I mean that there are no guarantees about which animal species you may see and it can vary significantly between drives.  Despite the best efforts of our guide, we did not manage to find leopard or cheetah, but apart from this, during the short time we were in camp, we saw a good variety of animals and were thrilled by the experience.

We thank you Katharine for all of your early advice in selecting our venues as they all turned out to be great and the experience has left us with some great photos and memories. If it were not for family commitments in 2016 we would be looking to book our next safari now and will not hesitate to contact The Big 5 Safari Company for our next two location safari.

We had an amazing time and I would like to thank you for everything you did in organising this for us.  Our accommodation in both Hwange and Vic Falls were lovely. I know you had some input as well into helping to organise the renewal of our wedding vows – a complete surprise to me but such a special day, so thank you again. Khulu Ivory Lodge was perfect, we all absolutely loved the place, unfortunately animal sightings weren’t quite as much as we had hoped for but I think this may have been the time of year (as it wasn’t the real dry season the vegetation was still quite high so difficult to spot animals).  The team at the Lodge were fantastic, we couldn’t have asked for more, it really is a perfect setting.

So many special memories that will stay with us forever.

We were safari virgins ... we had however long harboured the thought that one day, when circumstances were right and finances permitted, we would visit the Okovango Delta in Botswana. Both of us having our 60th birthday made the time right.   In a flush of enthusiasm, my husband Googled madly and came up with a selection of 'budget' truck based safaris.  Not what I had in mind! In a flush of enthusiasm, my husband Googled madly and came up with a selection of ‘budget’ truck based safaris.  Not what I had in mind! I Googled madly and came up with The Big 5 Safari Company.

How fortuitous, they put together a memorable itinerary, heeding our request for small camps in remote locations. From first contact through to detailed planning, the trip itself and the follow up, they were professional, efficient, and not least, willing and able to design a trip to meet our expressed desires and aspirations.

We travelled from the arid plains of the Central Kalahari (Tau Pan Camp), to the enchanting Okavango (Pom Pom Camp), to the lush and fertile Linyanti River (Lebala Camp) rounding off with some R & R at the stunning Falls (Victoria Falls Hotel).

All 3 camps offered stylish and characterful accommodation with friendly, attentive staff and professional management.  The guides and trackers were awesome in their knowledge of the wildlife, game, birds, nature and culture. We learnt so much from them.

The range and quality of the experience was fantastic.  Everything worked like clockwork. We thought this would be a one off high end experience but no … we booked a return trip within weeks of coming back! No excuse needed this time.

Thank you Big 5 for such a brilliant experience and in particular Katharine Hunt.

Victoria Falls – the Wildlife Safari Hub

Victoria Falls, one of the world’s Seven Natural Wonders, is without doubt Zimbabwe’s top tourist attraction and one of the best locations in Africa to build a safari around. Many parks are conveniently located within a 300 mile radius of The Falls, offering a choice of inland delta, deserts, salt pans, plains grasslands, mountains and riparian forests.  So our advice would be to spend 2 or 3 nights at Victoria Falls and then take your pick of the following destinations radiating from ...
